2.1    An Online Site may contain applications or links to other websites (including other social media websites and some linked competition websites such as ‘Rider of the Month’ photo competition) which are owned or operated by third parties independent of InsureMyRide (“Third Party Sites”). InsureMyRide does not sponsor, endorse or approve of the operators of Third Party Sites, or material (including services, information, graphics, or data) which is located on such Third Party Sites (“Third Party Material”). 2.5    When following a link on an Online Site, material at a Third Party Site may be displayed in your browser framed by Site Content. This material is also Third Party Material for the purpose of these Online Terms.

3.    Your privacy

3.1    Your privacy and security is important to InsureMyRide. Read terms 24 to 32 for information (the 'Privacy Statement' component) about how InsureMyRide handles the information you provide it when you use one of our Online Sites.

4.    InsureMyRide’s Online Site: product information and insurance purchase and renewal

4.1    Online Site content
The InsureMyRide Online Site contains both information of a general nature about InsureMyRide and InsureMyRide’s products and services, and also enables you to purchase and pay for some insurance products and services online.

The InsureMyRide Online Site may, where InsureMyRide provides the  functionality online, enable you to renew some insurance products and services online and to view, manage and change your InsureMyRide policies online using InsureMyRide’s ‘self service’ function available at the ’My Insurance’ part of the Online Site (the “My Insurance Site”) subject to these Online Terms, including the specific terms of use for that service set out in term 6.

4.2    Completing transactions on the Online Sites

4.2.1    When entering into a transaction via the Online Site, whether it be for the issuance of an insurance contract, a renewal payment, or a transaction relating to any other product or service, the transaction will not be completed until an “Electronic Instruction” (being any electronic instruction, information, message, request or communication issued or transmitted to InsureMyRide via the Online Site) containing the acceptance from you of InsureMyRide’s offer, or the confirmation of payment (being payment received from you), whichever is applicable, has been received and processed by InsureMyRide, and any specific steps or requirements as set out in this term 4, have been complied with.

4.2.2    You acknowledge that on occasion, the transmission of your acceptance or the confirmation of any payment, made through an Electronic Instruction, may be delayed or not received at all by InsureMyRide in accordance with this term 4 for reasons beyond either parties’ reasonable control including, but not limited to, mechanical, software, computer, telecommunications, or electronic failure, or the omission or failure of third party service providers or systems.

4.2.3    You further acknowledge that, to the extent permitted by law, neither InsureMyRide nor the issuer of the insurance products, are liable to you in any way for any loss or damage at all and however caused, arising directly or indirectly in connection with the transmission of an Electronic Instruction through the Main Site, or any failure to receive an Electronic Instruction for whatever reason.

4.3    Purchasing insurance policies

4.3.1    Where the Online Site enables you to purchase insurance products or services online:

(a)    You and InsureMyRide (“the parties”) may enter into an insurance policy using the Online Site by InsureMyRide making an electronic offer via the Online Site and you electronically communicating your acceptance of that offer via the Online Site to InsureMyRide;
(b)    InsureMyRide may act on and process all completed Electronic Instructions transmitted or issued through the Online Site without further consent from or reference to you; and
(c)    InsureMyRide may treat an Electronic Instruction as authentic and is under no obligation to investigate the authenticity or authority of persons issuing or transmitting such Electronic Instructions, or to verify the accuracy and completeness of such Electronic Instructions.

4.3.2    Creating a binding insurance contract with InsureMyRide (as authorised representative of the issuer of the insurance product) via the Online Site is a two-step process:

(a)    the first step is to request a quote for the insurance product you are interested in and have selected (for example, by using the online “Get An Instant Quote” facility). Upon completion by you of provision all required details, the Online Site will provide you with a quote, subject to meeting underwriting guidelines, identified by a quote number. This quote and quote number will remain valid and accessible on the Online Site for up to 30 days; and
(b)    if you wish to purchase insurance in accordance with a quote provided to you by InsureMyRide via the Online Site, then, upon completion by you of all required details, step two enables you to accept that quote and create a binding insurance agreement with a corresponding InsureMyRide policy number subject to payment conditions in term 4.3.3 being met.

4.3.3    When entering into a contract via the Online Site, you will be taken to have communicated your acceptance to an offer of insurance from InsureMyRide only when:

(a)    the Electronic Instruction containing the acceptance of the offer from you is entered via the Online Site and is received and recorded in the main InsureMyRide database;
(b)    an InsureMyRide policy number is generated by the InsureMyRide database; and
(c)    InsureMyRide receives all required details of a current and valid payment card or current and valid financial institution account number (in either case a card/account which you are authorised to use and which is of a card/account type accepted by InsureMyRide), and to which InsureMyRide is able to successfully charge/debit the full premium amount, or the first premium instalment where InsureMyRide offers you the pay by instalments option. Creation of a binding insurance contract is conditional on InsureMyRide receiving such payment.

4.3.4    If you elect to pay your premium by instalments, then you may be able to select the particular day of each month (or other instalment period) on which your payment card or financial institution account number will be automatically charged/debited for the relevant payment.

4.3.5    Where a transaction is entered into between InsureMyRide and you via the Online Site for the purchase of an insurance product, a policy number will be issued by InsureMyRide via the Online Site. However, a binding insurance agreement is not conditional on the issuance or receipt by you of a policy number.  The failure by you to receive a policy number does not invalidate or otherwise prejudice the existence of an insurance contract or transaction entered into using the Online Site.

4.3.6    The existence of a binding contract is not conditional on InsureMyRide issuing, or you receiving, a paper confirmation of the transaction.

4.3.7    You are responsible for ensuring that you receive a policy number.If you have paid your full premium, or your first premium instalment where the instalment option has been offered to you and you have agreed to pay by this method, and have not received your policy number from InsureMyRide, you should contact InsureMyRide to request the policy number for your records.

4.3.8    Where you complete a quote on the Online Site and select an alternate payment option (meaning not a payment card payment online or a financial institution account debit payment), a binding insurance agreement is not created. Instead, you will need to make payment via an alternate option (such as paying by B-Pay, at an Australia Post Office, or by making a payment card payment to InsureMyRide over the phone). When paying by an alternate payment option, a binding insurance agreement will only be created once InsureMyRide receives your full premium payment, or when InsureMyRide receives your first premium instalment, if we have offered this payment option to you and you have agreed to pay us your premium by instalments.

4.4    Renewal payments

4.4.1    The Online Site may offer an online facility for renewal payment of certain InsureMyRide policies with selected payment cards.
4.4.2    The policy renewal notice will indicate whether online renewal payment is available.
4.4.3    When the renewal payment facility is available, an online renewal payment can be made by following the “Quick Renewal” link on the Online Site.
4.4.4    When making a payment for a policy renewal via the Online Site, you will be taken to have renewed that policy only when:

(a)    the Electronic Instruction containing the policy number, premium amount due and payment card details, and an instruction from you to renew the policy, enters and is recorded in the relevant payment database;
(b)    InsureMyRide receives all required details of a current and valid payment card which you are authorised to use, which is of a payment card type accepted by InsureMyRide, and to which InsureMyRide is able to charge the premium; and
(c)    an InsureMyRide receipt number is generated by the payment system.

4.4.5    A binding renewal insurance contract is conditional on InsureMyRide being able to successfully charge against your nominated payment card and InsureMyRide receiving payment of all applicable renewal amounts due for the policy (or policies) being renewed (either in a single payment or where permitted in instalments, by receipt of the first instalment sum).
4.4.6    The existence of a valid payment is not conditional on InsureMyRide issuing, or you receiving, a paper confirmation of the transaction.

5.    InsureMyRide’s Online Site: payments

5.1    All payments for insurance products, renewals, amendments or other services purchased via the Online Site (including additional premium or other payments which arise from policy amendments made using the My Insurance Site, as described in term 6.3), must be paid in full by clear funds by the due date specified in the relevant confirmation. In respect of instalment payments, the relevant instalment must be paid in full by the specified due date.

5.2    Unless provided for otherwise, all payments referred to in term 5.1 above are to be made by permitted payment cards (or permitted financial institution account debits, as relevant) at the time of purchase, renewal or amendment (as the case may be) of the applicable InsureMyRide policy or service.
In the case of a payment card transaction, you must therefore provide to InsureMyRide details of your permitted current and valid payment card, including:

(a) payment card type;
(b) name on payment card;
(c) payment card number;
(d) card verification value (CVV); and
(e) expiry date.

In the case of a financial institution account debit, you must provide to InsureMyRide details of your permitted current and valid financial institution account, including:

(a) the name of your financial institution;
(b) the full name of the account holder; and
(c) the account number and its BSB number (bank/state/branch number).

6.    InsureMyRide’s Online Site: ‘My Insurance’ self service site

The ‘My Insurance’ (“self service site”), which forms part of our Online Site, enables you to view, manage and change certain details of your InsureMyRide policy online. In addition to the rest of these Online Terms, the specific terms in this term 6 apply to the self service site.

6.1    All Accessing the Self Service Site

6.1.1    Most parts of the self service site are only accessible to you if you have “logged in” by providing certain details as requested by InsureMyRide on the log-in, registration and/or authentication pages of the self service site, relating to you and/or one of your insurance policies currently held with InsureMyRide. (Collectively, this information is your “Login”). You will only be able to “log-in”, generate a Login, and use the Self Service Site if you hold at least one current InsureMyRide policy.
6.1.2    You must not provide details of your Login to any other person. You must not allow any other person to use your Login.
6.1.3    You must not use the Self Service Site to access or modify the details of another person without their clear authority. Criminal penalties may apply if you do so.

6.2    Loading your policy details into the self service site
You may, in relation to any of your current InsureMyRide policies and using the functionality of the self service site, include details of those policies in the self service site and associate such policies with your Login (each such policy then being a “Loaded Policy”).

6.3    Amending your policy using the self service site
During the term of your policy, and using the self service site, you may have the option of adding, removing or amending certain accessories, modifications and other aspects of your policy. Any such amendment to your policy may result in an additional premium or sum being payable in respect of the amendment. You will be advised if this is the case. Any additional premium must be paid for in accordance with term 5 before the modification to your policy takes effect.

6.4    Your policy only
For the avoidance of doubt, the self service site only permits you (or where you are a joint policyholder, you and the other named policyholders) to view, manage and change certain details of your InsureMyRide policies. Access to a policy which is not held solely in your name or jointly in your name and the name of others is not permitted.

However, the self service site does not allow:

(a)    the removal by one policyholder of other policyholders from a policy (where a joint policy is held); or
(b)    the cancellation of a policy.

You should contact InsureMyRide by email or phone if you wish to request removal of a policyholder or cancellation of your policy.

7.    Valuation tools, calculators, games and other features

7.1    Our Online Site may contain or make available various tools, calculation devices, software programs, games or other features which assist you in calculating the optimal insurance policy, premium, or level of excess for you. Our Online Site may also contain other useful information.

7.2    Whilst InsureMyRide has undertaken reasonable steps to ensure that any such features or information as described in term 7.1 above are accurate and free from defect, InsureMyRide does not warrant the accuracy, adequacy, correctness or completeness of these features, which are provided on an “as is” basis, or their suitability for your particular purpose. The use by you of any of these features or any information provided is entirely at your own risk. The monetary figures used by these features in any calculations are estimates only and do not take account of your particular circumstances.

8.    InsureMyRide’s standard terms and acceptance criteria apply

All applications for insurance or other products made via the Online Site are subject to and must comply with InsureMyRide’s normal acceptance criteria (which is inclusive of the particular product issuer’s normal acceptance criteria) and are governed by the normal terms and conditions applying to each product or service requested. The terms and conditions of the insurance products InsureMyRide offers are contained in our Product Disclosure Statements. These documents also explain important information about InsureMyRide and the product issuers.

9.    Social media content you submit to our Social Media Sites

Social Media Site Users warrant and agree that: (a) they will not submit any Social Media Site User Content that is unlawful, fraudulent, or which may breach any intellectual property rights, privacy, publicity or other right, or is unreasonably commercial (for example, a ‘guerrilla marketing’ attempt), defamatory, obscene, profane, derogatory, pornographic, sexually inappropriate, violent, abusive, harassing, threatening, objectionable with respect to race, religion, origin or gender, not suitable for children aged under 15, misleading or deceptive, or otherwise unsuitable for publication; (b) they will obtain prior consent to the submission of their Social Media Site User Content from all persons who appear in (for example, in photographs) or have any rights in relation to any property that appears in or forms part of their Social Media Site User Content; (c) their Social Media Site User Content will be their own original work and, to the extent that any rights in that work (including copyright) are not owned by the Social Media Site User, they will obtain full prior consent from any person who has jointly created or has any rights in the Social Media Site User Content, to the uses and terms herein; (d) their Social Media Site User Content shall not contain viruses or cause injury or harm to any person or entity or device; and (e) they will comply with all applicable laws and regulations, including without limitation, those governing copyright, content, defamation, privacy, publicity and the access or use of others' computer, mobile communications device or any other communication systems.

9.3    Without limiting any other terms herein, the Social Media Site User agrees to indemnify InsureMyRide (and any of its related bodies corporate) for any loss or expense InsureMyRide and/or any of its related bodies corporate may suffer in relation to any breach of the above terms.

9.4    Social Media Site Users consent to any use of their Social Media Site User Content in accordance with term 9 which may otherwise infringe their moral rights pursuant to the Copyright Act 1968, including InsureMyRide or its affiliates and sub-licensees using and reproducing that Social Media Site User Content without attributing it to the Social Media Site User, or making modifications or adaptations to the Social Media Site User Content for the purpose of reproducing, publishing or displaying that modified or adapted content in another media. Social Media Site Users warrant and agree that they will, prior to its submission, obtain an equivalent consent from each other person who has created the Social Media Site User Content. The Social Media Site User agrees to indemnify InsureMyRide (and any of its related bodies corporate) against all costs and claims by third parties arising from a breach of this warranty.

Road Bike - Rides

My Southern Soiree

Peter Uren

The forecast was for rain. I hadn't ridden on wet roads very often and didn't have a lot of confidence in my own ability to ride safely in the wet. But then, I suppose that you only get confidence by actually riding in the rain. And rain, it did.
Group photo before leaving for the trip

I arose early to the sound of rain drops on the patio roof. It was only a light shower, but it was persistent. The plan was to ride to Mittagong where I would meet up with my mate DeanO for the ride to Canberra where we'd over-night at his place. Then I'd ride with Dean to Cooma where he'd turn back and I'd proceed to Khancoban to meet up with John, Ray and Anna who were riding up from Melbourne.

After an overnighter, we were to take the long fast route to Taggerty, near Lake Eildon, for an overnight stay at John's and then to Werribee, where the journey south finishes. After a rest day, it was back home again. I had thought of taking the Putty Road south to Sydney to save the prospect of early-onset boredom. However, I had a deadline to make and wasn't sure how long that road would take. With the rain, it was probably a safer bet to take the Pacific Highway.

I set out on my BMW K1200GT at just after 8.30, all loaded and togged up. I had a full set of leathers on, as well as a rain over-suit that I'd had for a while, but had never been tested in the rain. It all felt very cumbersome at first. I was also a little apprehensive about the road and the traffic and took things fairly easy.

The rain fell steadily and gave little sign of letting up until I reached the outskirts of Sydney. I'm glad it finally did let up, as I didn't much like the prospect of heavy traffic on a wet greasy road. I don't think I could ever get used to the madness of Sydney traffic. I made it to the M2/M7 tollways and eventually headed south past Campbelltown away from the big smoke.

I arrived at out rendezvous within five minutes of the planned window, which wasn't bad as I hadn't been there before. However, Dean, on his R1150RS, passed by in the opposite direction, having missed the location and headed out onto the freeway. It would be another half hour before he found somewhere to turn around and return to our planned meeting place. And for his troubles, a passing rainstorm dumped its load and saturated him. After we filled up with fuel, it was time to fill us up. DeanO took us on a mix of back roads and highway to his favourite food place, the old truck stop at Marulan.

A hamburger and chips sure filled the belly, and the coffee was pretty good too. Having satisfied the hunger pangs, the rain having stopped, it was back out onto the highway down to Goulburn. It was here that we left the Hume to take in some of the back roads to Canberra.

As we meandered our way through Goulburn, I noticed a strange contraption outside the local wreckers. I just had to go back for a look and a photo (which I did on my return journey). There was a pink Hillman Imp front end with a Honda CB 250T rear end. I was not sure if the contraption was a Honda Imp or a Hillman 250, but I was pretty certain that despite the machine being an engineering marvel, the resulting beast was much less than the sum of its parts. However, Dean's concentration was fixed on a 4WD towing a trailer that was impeding our progress.

We eventually overtook said vehicle and proceeded to raise our touring speed. The road took us through Lake Bathurst and Bono to Doughboy. The road was relatively smooth, except for several patches where the local council was doing some work, and which the wet weather had turned to mud.

We then took the Kings Highway through Bungendore and Queanbeyan to the nations Capital. As we approached our day's final destination, the heavens again opened and we were greeted by a massive thunderstorm. Ringing wet, we arrived at Dean's place. Thankfully, the welcome was warm; the beer was cold; and the food, hot. We hung everything up to dry and had a good night's rest.

The next morning dawned bright and sunny. The forecast was for good weather for the next few days. After a breakfast of barbecued bacon and egg sandwiches (mmm yum) and coffee, I gave my bike a quick tub to wash off the mud from yesterday and it was bags packed and off to Cooma. We tempered our exuberance in the knowledge that the Monaro Highway is often heavily policed. However, if there were any highway patrols around that Saturday morning, we didn't see any.

The road was in very good condition to cope with the many vehicles that travel that way during the ski season. Nevertheless, we merely sat on or just over the speed limit, enjoying the lovely weather and surveying the countryside. I was amazed at the myriad colours of the landscape, from the darkest greens, through khakis to browns, greys and pale yellows and every shade in between. However, the overwhelming feature was of dryness. While many of the fields had pastures for the sheep, they were, for spring, very dry and the many dams were mostly empty.

With summer still a month away, it does not auger well for a good season on the land in the Southern Highlands. Pretty soon we were cruising into Cooma. We located a coffee shop and parked the bikes out front. After coffee it was farewell to DeanO who rode back to Canberra. For me, it was the beginning of the next chapter in my adventure. I had two choices to get to Khancoban: the Snowy Mountains Highway and turning off at Kiandra through the Kosciuszko National Park or the Alpine Way through Jindabyne and Thredbo.
Southern highlands

I'd done the Alpine Way before, albeit some 20 years ago, so I took off up the Snowy Mountains Highway. The road was smooth and open and I made good time. The weather was perfect, warm, despite the altitude and there was little breeze. What was even better was the lack of traffic; I only passed about six vehicles between Cooma and Kiandra.

The road from Kiandra to Khancoban is a ripper. It's listed as Ride 23 in Peter 'Bear' Theoming's Australia Motorcycle Atlas, although he rode it in the reverse direction. All up it's 79 kilometres of winding road that passes through Cabramurra, Australia's highest town. The traffic was even lighter than on the Snowy Mountains Highway, in fact, I didn't pass one vehicle going in the same direction that I was travelling in. I did, however, pass hundreds of bikes and numerous other vehicles coming towards me.

The road was fairly narrow in places and there were no lane markings, so it was a bit hairy on some corners with on-coming traffic. It was alright with the bikes, but some of the 4WDs wanted all of their side and some of mine. You would imagine that riding through a National Park that you would need to keep an eye out for animals - wombats, kangaroos, wallabies and possums. In fact, the Bear's book warns about that very thing. However, parts of the park had been subjected to catastrophic fires in recent years which had devastated swathes of forest.

In some places, whole mountains have been laid bare, with just skeletons where ancient snow gums once grew. In one place, I felt that I was riding through an enchanted forest where skeletal fingers of dead snow gums reach across the road from either side. In these sad places, there was no road-kill because the fires had either consumed or scared off all the forest inhabitants.

Eventually, I made it to Khancoban. I'd made a booking at the Alpine Inn over the internet. The place was easy to find and was motorcycle friendly. What's more, the motel is right next to the Pickled Parrot Hotel and Restaurant, which served cold beer and good tucker. As I waited for John, Ray and Anna to arrive, I had lunch and a refreshing ale. It would be another three hours before they turned up, so I had a look around the village.

The place has a history going back to the 1950s with the construction of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. It was used as a staging point for the construction teams that built that engineering marvel. Pretty soon the guys trundled up, John on his Ducati 999S and Ray and Anna on a Buell Ulysses. After reacquaintances and unpacking, we all retired to the bar for some refreshments. John then took a power-nap, while the rest of us took a walking tour of the village; it was very small and, except for the terrific rose garden, there wasn't much to see. We had a late dinner and retired to bed for an early start. The motel didn't serve breakfast, so it was off to Corryong to satisfy the hunger pangs. We found a bakery in the main street that was already doing a roaring trade with a number of bikes parked out front.

It seemed that the Coffin Cheaters were in town, or at least passing through. After ordering our food we dutifully sat out front to watch the passing parade of bikes. One rider, on a customised Harley, did a terrific impersonation of a stunt rider, pulling the most impressive wheelie I'd ever seen on a street bike. Our tummies filled, now it was time for our bikes. However, the local service station didn't have any premium.

Still, better to fill up on standard, than run the risk of running out looking for another servo. It would also be a test of our respective knock-sensors. The day's riding would take us on numerous B and C roads through Victoria's north-east. The roads would take us through some of the most picturesque countryside in the state; from the fertile Murray Valley, to the foothills of the Great Dividing Range.

Our first leg of the day's ride took us along the Murray Valley Highway to Tallangatta, Ride 53 in Bear's Atlas. The road meandered through rich farming country. There was only light traffic, allowing fast riding. After Tallangatta, we crossed over onto the Kiewa Valley Highway riding to Dederang where we turned off toward Myrtleford for our first stop of the day - morning tea at John's sister's place.

Myrtleford is quiet at this time of the year, but during winter, it serves as the base for many skiers visiting Mount Buffalo and Mount Beauty. We left Myrtleford, heading toward Wangaratta, but turned south before reaching the city. Eventually, we ended up at Whitfield where it was time to play. The road between Whitfield and Mansfield, Ride 49 in Bear's Atlas, was just designed for motorbikes. Bear describes it as "a terrific road, but take some care - it's very popular with Sunday riders". Well it was Sunday and we were out for a good ride.

The road has a mixture of tight technical corners and fast open curves. Sadly, not all of the tight corners are well signposted and I nearly came to grief at one 45 km/h corner that I arrived at too fast. Nevertheless, we had a great time and arrived at Mansfield safely. There was no short cut to our day's destination, so it was a big loop around Lake Eildon to Alexandra and then a quick ride (with quick being the operative word) to Taggerty and lunch. Lunch? it was three o'clock in the afternoon!

The others tucked in to smoked trout and cheese, but I satisfied myself with coffee and cookies. From there it was just a short ride to John's place where we would spend the night. John lives on a 100 acre property that was once cattle grazing country. It now has a plantation of timber that stretches off into the distance from his back veranda. Beyond the boundary of John's property is Cathedral Mountain, which serves as a picturesque backdrop to the newly planted forest.

On Monday, instead of taking the easy route down the Maroondah Highway through Healesville, we took the road that would keep us out of suburbia for as long as possible through Yea, Flowerdale and Whittlesea. Nevertheless, the closer we got to Melbourne, the heavier the traffic became, and so eventually, we just went with the flow.

With a brief detour to an international courier to drop off a package for John, it was the freeway city to Werribee and home for Ray and Anna. Tuesday was a rest day (and a bike free day) where Ray showed me the sights of the city. I haven't lived there for over 16 years and many things have changed, not all for the better.

Still, it seemed to be much easier to drive around Melbourne than Sydney, not that that's saying much. Wednesday signalled the beginning of the end as I left Melbourne to head north and home. I had toyed with the idea of taking the long way back, but home beckoned and the quickest way was up the Hume Highway. I made it to the border on one tank of fuel sitting on the speed limit and another tank to Goulburn where I spent the night.

The mind was willing to go further, but the body was tired and aching from sitting in one position for so long. After another overnight stay in a hotel (my last for the trip) it was home. To welcome me back to Marulan, the heavens opened up again, but the rain only lasted for about half an hour. Then it was the tollway, freeway and home. One more tank of fuel took me to within a few clicks of the Terrace. All in all it was a week of great riding, on great roads with great friends.
