The Aark Racing InsureMyRide Triumph team headed for Melbourne’s Phillip Island circuit on Thursday the 23rd of February 2012  to participate in the first round of the ASBK Championships. It was shaping up to be an exciting weekend under the eyes of the World Superbike paddock.

Mitchell Carr onboard the Aark Racing/InsureMyRide Triumph Daytona 675R was keen to kick off the year on a high as pre-season testing showed the Triumph and Mitchell will be a major contender.

Mitchell topped the free practice on Thursday afternoon, where the conditions were testing as riders struggled with grip at turn 1 and 2 due to the lack of rubber on the surface. Mitchell recorded a 1.38.0 lap time at the end of the 30 minute fee practice with the next closest rival being 1.4 seconds behind.

The team returned to Phillip Island on Friday morning for qualifying planning to set a comfortable time in Q1, with the aim of minimising tyre wear. After being bathed in sunshine for the previous two days, the fog rolled and hovered over the track just prior to Q1. The strategy was to use the first two laps to warm up and then complete two flying laps and record consistent qualifying lap times. At the end of the 20 min session, Mitchell had recorded a time of 1.37.4 giving him P1, by 6 tenths of a second.

Conditions improved for Q2, as the sun appeared and the track temp rose. Minor adjustments were made to the suspension to improve rear grip, with a decision to remain on the Q1 tyres, leaving 2 new sets for the races. The strategy was to complete 2 laps to test the new set ups, return to the pits and assess competitor times. After completing 2 laps, it was evident the changes had improved handling, with Mitchell recording a time of 1.37.3 placing him at P1. Honda’s Rider, Josh Hook, took P2 with a time of 137.7 and Brodie Waters P3 re-cording 1.38.0.

The top 4 riders from Supersport qualified to compete in Saturdays Superpole, as temperatures were hitting the mid 30’s with the track temp exceeding 50. Mike Jones was to head the Superpole charge, followed by Brodie Waters, Josh Hook and Mitchell Carr. As Mitchell began his flying lap, Brodie Waters was topping the charts with a lap time of 1.37.9. In the hot conditions, Mitchell pushed through and completed a flawless lap to record 1.36.7, 1.2 seconds faster than the 2nd placed Supersport rider. With race one less than 10 minutes away, the team then had to frantically work to prepare the bike.

Race one began perfectly as Mitchell had a flying start on his Triumph 675R moving to the lead, with his head down he broke away from his competitors, leading by 2 seconds before the race was red flagged on lap 2. A serious incident had taken place at turn 3, resulting the death of Oscar Mcintyre, there was no more racing that day.
