Smets Teams With BMW

BMW's elusive new 450cc four-stroke dirt bike

BMW's elusive new 450cc four-stroke dirt bike, which has been glimpsed in prototype form at several motocross tracks throughout Europe recently, has officially broken cover – and it will be paired with none other than multiple World Motocross Champion Joel Smets.

BMW's off-road heritage goes back some 81 years, but it picked up the pace considerably 25 years ago, when the R80 GS first began contesting the gruelling Paris-Dakar Rally. However, its off-road endeavours have been ramped up yet again in recent years, with bikes like the R1200 GS, R1200 GS Adventure, F650 GS Dakar, HP2 and more recently the G 650 Xchallenge, all sharpening the image of the marque in the rough stuff.

The German marque has now confirmed the presence of a 450cc single-cylinder prototype, which has been developed to test new BMW concepts in the heat of competition. What's more, Smets – along with multiple German enduro champion Sascha Eckert and European Cross Country Champion Simo Kirssi – will campaign the bike in selected rounds of the World Enduro Championship in 2007, in the E2 class.

First appearing at Puerto Lumbreras in Spain in late April, the bike will also have outings at a limited number of other rounds through the remainder of the season. The bike is a logical next step in BMW's continued exploration of the off-road world, where it has steadily been refining its dirt-capable models for a number of years.
